The name Makara Sankranthi is know because the sun enters the Makara rashi (Capricorn) and sankranthi is the movement of sun from one zodiac sign to another. On this day Lord surya Deva(God Sun) is worshipped. Makara Sankranti is celebrated on the same day of every year i.e. 14th January every year and sometimes on 15th January as it follows solar calendar
Get up early in the morning, before sunrise, have head bath and wash all god and goddess Vigraha which are worshipped everyday kept in pooja room. Do Tarpan for your ancestors. Offer water to the ancestors while praying for their blessings and chant Gayathri mantra. Resolve to live with the ideals of your ancestors and to redeem the pledges of your forefathers. The Tharpana is left only by men whose father has passed away.Prepare 2 baginas as part of the festival. Each bagina usually contains a packet of Arshina(turmeric), kumkuma(vermilion), bangles, a comb, a small mirror, bale bicchole, blouse piece, 5 types of fruits. pumpkin, field beans(avarekalu), sweet potato(Genasu) cut in a small cube form, raw ground nut. The bagina is offered in a traditional mora (winnow painted with turmeric). The baginas are given to married women before breakfast.
Do pooja (put arshina (turmeric), kumkuma(vermilion)) for a vessel which is kept on a stove and cook sweet pongal and Khara Pongal in the same. This is then offered during the pooja for naivedya and then served among family members and friends.
