Kasi Viswanath Temple
The Kasi temple is dedicated to Lord Visweswara (Lord Shiva). It is known to be as one of the twelve Jyothir lingas of Shiva in India which attracts a lot of pilgrims throughout the year. It is believed to be the holiest place, due to the permanent presence of Lord Shiva, as Kasi Viswanath.
History of the temple
This temple was destroyed several times by the rulers like Mohammed Ghori, Aurangzeb, and Warren Hastngs and was rebuilt several times. The present existing temple was built by Rani Ahillyabai Dikar in 1776 A.DAbout Varanasi
The Kasi temple is located in Varanasi, which as the name indicates that is located between two rivers Varana and Asi. Varanasi is also known for its classical Hindustani music, and has produced many well known musicians like Pandit Ravi Shankar, and Ustad Bismillah Khan.Benaras Hindu University also located in Varanasi is perhaps the largest university in Asia. It has 32 areas of study spread over 2000 acres which was donated by the Maharaja of Benaras in the early part of the century. The University was founded by the scholar Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The University is noted for its studies in Sanskrit and in Indian culture, including art and music and attracts students from India and abroad.
