G Visas and NATO Visas

G visas and NATO visas are issued for employees of international organizations and NATO to enter the U.S.

  • G visas is issued for officials and employees of international organizations visiting for official work.
  • NATO visas is issued for officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization visiting for official work.
  • G visas are given to employees of international organizations to enter the US and NATO visas are only for NATO employees.
  • The applicants who are officials from international organizations and NATO must be on official duties from their employers.
  • The applicants must prove that they are sent by the international organization or NATO for work like meetings or workshops.
  • The applicant can enter and stay in the U.S only for the duration of the official activities.

There are different subcategories in G visa and NATO visa.

Types of NATO Visas

  1. NATO-1 visa is issued for permanent associates or staff members of NATO.
  2. NATO-2 visa for representatives of associates states of NATO, or advisors/technical experts to a NATO delegation.
  3. NATO-3 visa is issued for a member of the official clerical staff accompanying representatives of associates of states to NATO or any of its subsidiaries.
  4. NATO-4 visa given to foreign nationals who are categorized as NATO officials.
  5. NATO-5 visa given to foreign nationals categorized as NATO experts
  6. NATO-6 visa is given to associates of a civilian component of NATO
  7. NATO-7 visa is issued to attendants or personal employees of NATO-1 to NATO-6 visas.

Types of G Visas

  1. G-1 visa is for employees with permanent mission and their dependents of a recognized government who work for an international organization.
  2. G-2 visa is for agents and their dependents of a recognized government travelling to the U.S for meetings of an international organization
  3. G-3 visa is for representatives and their dependents of non-member government.
  4. G-4 visa for individuals and their dependents who are travelling to the U.S to be appointed to an international organization.
  5. G-5 visa is issued for personal employees or domestic workers of G-1 to G-4 visa holders.

Requirements of G Visas and NATO Visas
  • Applicant must prove that they have been sent by their corresponding international organizations or NATO.
  • They must present evidence of the duties they will have while in the U.S. to prove eligibility for the visas.
  • The applicant must prove that the international organization is recognized by the U.S government and president.
  • Some officials who belong to the armed forces personnel are relieved from having to get a NATO visa for who are attached to the NATO Allied Headquarters in the U.S. / is on official duties and entering the U.S under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement

  1. Complete form DS-160

STEP 1:Complete form DS-160
  • Complete Form DS-160 -form -form fill.
  • After successfully completing the application, you will receive a confirmation number a 10-digit number.
  • This confirmation number is necessary for setting up of visa interview appointment.

STEP 2:Form DS-1648

If the applicant has held a G-1 to G-4 or NATO-1 to NATO-6 visa before he/she need to fill Form DS-1648 to get A, G, and NATO Visas.

  • After successfully completing the application, you will receive a confirmation number a 10-digit number.

STEP 3:Payment of Visa fees

Individuals who qualify for G visa or NATO visa they are exempt from visa application fees. The U.S Embassy though decides on a case-by-case basis whether someone should pay the fees or not.

STEP 3: Prepare visa documents file
  • A diplomatic passport with a validity period of more than 6 months after the intended departure date from the U.S.
  • Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Form DS-1648 confirmation page.
  • One photograph meeting the US Visa Photo Requirements
  • A note from international organization or NATO confirming the status and explaining the duties in the U.S with details like name of the employee, date of birth, job title, the name of the international organization the applicant will be working for, description of duties, travel dates, and length of stay in the U.S.
  • Other supporting documents -U. S Embassy might require additional documents based on the person’s position and purpose of visit to the U.S.
  • Detailed information of any dependents travelling along with the applicant.
Validity of G Visas and NATO Visas
  • G-1 to G-4 and NATO-1 to NATO-6 visas do not have a time limit, they are allowed to stay in the U.S as long as they have duties inside the country and can renew if the visa expires.
  • G-5 or NATO-7 visas have a validity of up to 3 years. After 3 years, they have to return to their home country and request visa extensions for additional 2 year.

Bringing Family to the U.S with G or NATO Visa

G or NATO visa holders can bring their immediate family members to the U.S with them.
Immediate family members mean spouse and unmarried legal son and daughter of the primary visa holder who will live in the same household.
Anyone who are related by blood, adoption or marriage to the primary visa holder can also apply for the visa if they fulfill the conditions above.

Green Card with G Visa or a NATO Visa

G or NATO primary visa holder and their dependents can be eligible for a Green Card if they fulfill any of the following conditions:
Individual- The individual must be an employee or retired officer of international organization and have lived in the U.S for at least 15 years before retirement or at least 50% of the last 7 years before applying for a Green Card and has filed for a special immigration status (Form I-360) at least 6 months after retirement can get Green card.
Spouse- A spouse of the deceased officer or employee of an international organization who has lived in the U.S for at least 15 years before the death of the spouse or at least 50% of the last 7 years before applying for a Green Card and has filed for a special immigration status (Form I-360) at least 6 months after months after the death of your spouse can get Green card
Children- Unmarried son or daughter of a current or former officer or employee of an international organization who lived in the U.S for at least 50% of the last 7 years before the child applied for a Green Card.
The child must have lived in the U.S for at least 7 years between ages 5 and 21 and should have filed for adjustment of status before or on your 25th birth day.
