Berlin is the capital city of Germany, with the population of around 3.5 million. It occupies the northeastern Germany, which is to the center of Brandenburg Metropolitan Region and has 6 million residents in the city. Berlin is slanted towards the European Plains as a result of which it is influenced by temperate climate. About one-third of the city's area is occupied by forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
Berlin's economy is fully based on service sector, creative industries, media centers and meeting venues. Berlin also serves as a main center for air and rail transportation.

History of Berlin

Summers are warm and sometimes humid with an average temperature of 22-25°C. Winters are cold with an average temperature of 3°C.

Places to visit

  • Brandenburg Gate: The Brandenburg Gate is one of the major historical landmarks in Berlin. It is the only building left in the ruins of Pariser Platz in 1945, apart from the Fine Arts, the gate was restored by the East Berlin and West Berlin governments.
  • DZ Bank: It was designed by Frank Gehry, and its architecture is like a horse's head.
  • Reichstag: Reichstag is behind the Brandenburg gate and is home of the German parliament. The building saw some damage from World War II, but in the 1990's, was remodeled by British architect Norman Foster.
  • The Pergamon Museum: This museum has reconstructed ancient monumental buildings such as Pergamon Altar, Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate.

Architecture

  • The Fernsehturm: This is situated at Alexanderplatz in Mitte and is one of the tallest structures (368 meters) in the European Union. Built in 1969, it is visible through most of the central districts of Berlin.
  • The East Side Gallery: is an open-air exhibition, the wall is painted fully with the traditional arts of the Berlin culture. It is the famous gallery which reminds the culture of Berlin.
  • The Brandenburg Gate: has the religious representation of Berlin and Germany. It also appears on German euro coins.

Transportation

Bus Routes: The Central Bus Station Berlin (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof Berlin, or ZOB) is located in Berlin's western district Charlottenburg, close to the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds under the Funkturm. The bus station served as an alternative to the rail transit corridors during German partition.

Cycling: Berlin is well known for its highly developed cycle lane system. It has been calculated that Berlin has 710 bicycles per 1000 residents. Around 500,000 daily bike riders were considered for 13% of total traffic in 2009.

Airport: It has two main airports namely Tegel Airport, which operates within the city limits, and Schonefeld Airport, which is situated outside Berlin bordering the state Brandenburg. Both airports together handle 22.3 million passengers.
