President Obama to Celebrate Diwali at White House

First time in East Room

US President, Barack Obama, amidst his hectic schedule decided to take part in Diwali celebration. On October 14th, Barack Obama, along with other members of the community will celebrate “Festival of Lights” in East Room of the White House. “At the East Room ceremony, the President will observe Diwali, or the “Festival of Lights,” a holiday celebrated across faiths,” the White House announced. The same day Obama will also sign an Executive Order restoring the White House Advisory Commission and Interagency Working Group to address the issues concerning the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Diwali celebration in the White House was started by former US President George W Bush, but he had never participated personally in the celebrations. Diwali was not celebrated in the white House but a building attached to it. This is for the first time in the history that Diwali celebrated in East Room of the White House. The East Room is usually utilized for ceremonial occasions. The speciality of this celebration this time is, President Obama‘s personal presence.
