Ms. Mallika Dutt, an Indian-American activist is honoured American Courage Award for her outstanding Human rights work in India and America. The 47 year old Culcutta born activist will receive the award on October 1 from Asian American Justice Center, a leading civil rights organisation in the country. “Its a huge honour getting an award from AAJC since they are at the forefront of ensuring that the presence of the Asian-American community is not marginalised,” Ms. Mallika told PTI. Ms. Dutt left for the US at her eighteenth age. She completed High School from Dehra Dun and studied International Relations at Columbia University and Law at New York University.
‘Sakhi’, an organization that assists South Asian women suffering from domestic violence in New York City was co-founded by Ms. Dutt. She started her human rights work fighting against immigration cases and later intervened in the field of women rights, criminal justice, environmental degradation and Native American rights. “I had to get a sense of human rights across the US,” she said. Currently Ms. Dutt is serving as human rights officer for Ford Foundation in New Delhi. She considers the ill-treatment of women as the most rigorous form of human rights breach in India. “On one hand we are on the cutting edge moving global and economic agendas but we are still far behind when it comes to women rights,” she said.
