Minister Krishna assures safety of Indian students in Australia.

Following attacks on Indian students this summer

Sep 11, 2009

There was lot of hue and cry about the Indian students being attacked in Australia. The media attributed the attacks as being purely for racial reasons. The fact is many Indian students reside in suburbs and cheap localities frequented by thugs, drug addicts and petty criminals and become easy targets while commuting during late hours. Nineteen students have been attacked in Melbourne and Sydney so far. Most of Indian students go to unauthorized education agents in India for Australian university admissions. These agents know little about the Australian lifestyle, their law and order and the ratings of the universities that they enrol as students. Students find later that the universities are not up to their expectation. They often feel frustrated when they find that the Universities they are studying in are run by Australian-Indian crooks and all their classmates are Indians.

To figure out the situation of Indian students in Australia, External affairs minister S.M.Krishna visited Australia. He was the first senior minister to visit after the attacks. According ABC online Krishna observed that Indians are “by and large welcome in Australia”. He also mentioned that he was happy that the Australian authorities have taken steps to safeguard the Indian students. Krishna said that he never views Australia as a racist nation. He also met Indian students in Australia and asked them to concentrate on the higher studies they are pursuing.
