What are Taxpayer Identification Numbers?

These are the identification numbers utilized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for taxation purposes. They are allotted either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by IRS.

Why Taxpayer Identification Numbers?

A Taxpayer Identification Number must be provided on tax return documents, statements and other papers related to tax purposes.

Examples: You need your TIN to file your tax returns, request tax agreement benefits, while opening your bank account, applying for credit card etc.

Social Security Number in the US

A Social Security number (SSN) is a nine digit number allotted to the U.S. citizens or anyone who has work permit under section 205(c)(2) of the Social Security Act. This number is used by the government to keep track of people's earnings and taxes. The Social Security with-holdings are used to pay the people who have retired or are disabled.

Procedure to receive a new SSN card in America

  • Locate your Social Security Regional office in your area. Click here to find out which is the closest regional office.
  • You can get the application form in your local office or you can download the form "Application for a Social Security Number Card" from the Social Security Administration Web site
  • The application cannot be sent through post as you need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status. You need to carry your green card or your visa. You need to provide age proof and identity proof. The documents which are suitable are as follows: birth certificate, school record, driver's license, marriage or divorce record, military records, employer ID card, adoption record, passport. They must be original documents or certified copies of the documents.
  • The card will be sent to your mailing address in few days. Make sure you have provided them your correct mailing address. You can give your friend's address or business address if you do not have a permanent address.

Employer Identification Number in the US

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also called a Federal Tax Identification Number. This number is used to recognize any commercial sector.

International customers can call (267) 941-1099, which is not a toll-free number

Applying through FAX

The Form SS-4 can be completed and faxed to your state's FAX number.

Applying through mail
The Form SS-4 can be completed and mailed to the IRS's address. The EIN number will be sent to your mailing address within four weeks.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in US

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number which is allotted to the nonresident people residing in U.S, their spouses and dependents who are unable to receive their (Social Security Number) SSN.
